On-Screen
Using the Windows XP On-Screen Keyboard
The Windows XP On-Screen Keyboard provides a reference for students typing in non-Western characters: Arabic, Hindi and Russian. The application pops up an image on the computer screen that explains which letters in that language correspond to the keys on a “QWERTY” keyboard.
The On-Screen Keyboard is always on top, so students can simply click on the characters to insert them into Microsoft Word, or a text box in a website or email program. This is also useful for students with limited mobility or difficulty typing.
To begin:
1. Click on the “Start” icon at the bottom left corner of the screen. Select “Programs”, then “Accessories”, then “Accessibillity”. Select “On-Screen Keyboard.”
2. The default language is always English. To change language, make sure that the On-Screen Keyboard is active. (The title bar will be blue instead of grey.)
3. Move your mouse to the Language Control Bar at the top of the screen. It will read “EN English (United States)” Click on it and select the language of your choice.4. The On-Screen Keyboard’s keys will automatically switch to that language.
